Hostel on Markowe Szczawiny
Babia Góra, a mountain situated within the perimeter of the Babia Góra National Park, often referred to as the Queen of the Beskids, is an incredibly popular location among tourists. Many people climb it in the early morning so as to be able to admire picturesque sunrises from the peak. On the slopes of Babia Góra there is a clearing called Markowe Szczawiny. The name of the clearing derives from its owner – a certain Marek from Zawoja – and Alpine sorrel [Polish: szczaw alpejski], which grows in abundance in the place of the former sheep pens. The history of the local hostel reaches back to 1906. Open in September of that year, it was the first Polish hostel in the Western Beskids. During celebrations commemorating the 100th anniversary of the hostel on Markowe Szczawiny, a cornerstone was laid for a new building, which was put into use in 2010. Since 1966, the Babia Góra Mountain Tourism Culture Centre has been operating on the clearing. Initially it was organised in a small house built upon the initiative of Edward Moskała as the first hostel. In 2011 it was transferred to the building of the former station of the Mountain Volunteer Search and Rescue Service. The exhibition in the Centre is devoted to the history of mountain tourism in the area of Babia Góra.
The new hostel building offers 70 beds, a buffet, and a winter equipment rental. The hostel organises lectures, concerts, meetings, parties, as well as trainings devoted to tourism, rescue and first aid.
